How can I become "addicted" to somthing positive/constructive? I can quit any one thing but always move on to somthing else.

Dr. William Glasser

Dr. William Glasser introduced the idea of "positive addiction" with his book of the same name in 1976. If you want to learn more about how he defined it and what he thought it could do, check out these brief excerpts from his book.

Here are a few tips for turning a hobby into a positive addiction:

  • Pick something that is not competitive and doesn't rely on other people for you to do--some examples are meditating, writing in a journal, or exercising.
  • Pick something that isn't very difficult for you to arrange or perform.
  • Do your "positive addiction" activity 45 minutes to an hour every day (or at least several times a week).
  • Don't criticize yourself or think you have to do it perfectly.
  • Expect it to take several months for your activity to become an "addiction" with positive benefits.
