Tiger Woods Sex Addiction? Speculation Abounds

Tiger Woods has been a feature in news headlines lately, with the most recent articles discussing a possibility of sex addiction. On December 11, Woods admitted unfaithfulness to his wife and announced a hiatus from golf. Following this announcement, several new outlets have speculated that Woods, who has been linked to as many as 13 different women, may be heading to sexual addiction rehab. According to David McDowell, addiction psychologist at Columbia University in New York, "He has clearly been demonstrating reckless and sexual compulsive behavior."

At a recent conference on sex addiction and cybersex, held in Montreal, therapist Dr. Stefanie Carnes suggested that "The shame, the betrayal and the fact it's based on sexuality can make [sex addiction] much more complicated than other types of addiction." She pointed out unique difficulties such as discussing sex addiction with your children. While sex addiction has not been formally recognized by the American Psychiatric Association, high-profile people like Tiger Woods and David Duchovny have brought the compulsive behavior into the spotlight in recent years.
