Smoking Cessation Treatments Safe & Effective For Mentally Ill
People with severe mental illness can be treated for dependence on smoking effectively and with no negative impact on mental health, study finds.
Researchers conducted a review of the best studies on smoking cessation treatments and people with severe mental illness. They found that the treatments appeared safe among people with a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and generally doubled their chance of quitting.
Why Is This Important?
People who suffer from severe mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, tend to have poor physical health, with mortality rates 3 times normal. They are also 2 to 3 times more likely to smoke, which contributes significantly to their health problems. While quitting smoking is known to improve health, doctors have been concerned that smoking cessation treatments could worsen the symptoms of mental illnesses. This study found that not only did smoking cessations treatments work for the severely mentally ill, they appeared to be safe as well. These findings may help pave the way for improved health among the mentally ill.
