Scientists Discover Impulsiveness Gene
According to a study recently published in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers out of the University of California at San Francisco have uncovered a genetic variation that creates a greater propensity for impulsiveness in those that have it, as much as double that of someone without it.
The disease of addiction is not strictly genetic, rather it develops from an amalgam of factors. Impulsiveness (and the inability to control it) has long been considered classic behavior of those suffering from alcoholism or drug addiction.
The ultimate goal for researchers is the development of a drug that can effect a change in the expression of certain genes like this one. Combined with psycho-social strategies such as counseling programs and support groups, they believe such drugs will make addiction more manageable for sufferers.
