Octo-Mom Goes to Rehab
Nadya Suleman, also known as "Octomom," has finally taken some responsibility for her actions and checked herself into the Chapman House Treatment Center for her addiction to the popular anti-anxiety medication Xanax.
Suleman became famous after she gave birth to octuplets, making her the second woman in U.S. history to accomplish this incredible feat. However, her history as a mother has been anything but incredible. After her small jump to fame, Suleman went from one shameless attention-seeking ploy to another, embarrassing herself and neglecting her 14 children (she already had six kids before giving birth to the octuplets).
Her Downward Spiral
Not only did the irresponsible mom make a pornography film ("Octo-mom Uncovered"), but she also tried her hand in the nightclub business by becoming a stripper. She also filed for bankruptcy after acquiring more than $1 million in debt, and she had her driver's license suspended. Her nanny and father both expressed concern that Suleman was driving under the influence and endangering her children by doing so.
The Dangers of Xanax
Suleman was smart to check into rehab for her Xanax addiction. Studies have shown that Xanax is the most addictive benzodiazepine because it produces the most withdrawal symptoms when taken regularly for more than eight weeks (it's not supposed to be taken as a daily medication). When a patient stops taking Xanax, his/her anxiety usually becomes much worse, and the patient may experience withdrawal symptoms such as weakness, insomnia, irritability, and in very severe cases, suicidal thoughts or actions. An overdose of Xanax, especially when combined with alcohol, can lead to a coma or even death.
Let's hope Suleman is truly seeking help for her addiction, and that this isn't just another one of her infamous attention-seeking stunts.
