What is a relapse?

So after 6 years of drinking and 2 DUIs later, I decided to get help 3 months ago. A firnd of mine helped my find a meeting in my area and I have been going twice a week. At first the cravings were tough but it slowly got a little better as every day went along.

Then this happened....Argh!

I had a drink last night. Only one. I feel horrible about it today.

Is this what a relapse is? Sorry......New to this....

Henry,

I battled sobriety for 2 years. Some days were easy some were hard. There were times when I fell back and got into drink after drink. What got me through is going to constant meetings. I can't stress enough how importangt that is.

Also, you coming here and telling us what happened is so important for your path to recovery,

Thanks. It means a lot. : :!: :!:

KEEP COMMING BACK IT WILL GET EASYER

relaspe is really a porcess........a series of poor decisions that lead to a lapse (1 x use) or relaspe (continued use). there is some really good literature out ther deal with coming up with a Relapse Prevention Plan for yourself.......looking at high risk situations and early warning signs....look into it in order to help yourself.

good luck in your recovery

It is something that can be part of the process of recovery. We all of course aim for total abstinence from our drug of choice but sometimes we fall and must pick ourselves up again

Relapse is simply the reawakening of the beast within.

A relapse etymologically, "who falls again" occurs when a person is affected again by a condition that affected them in the past. This could be a medical or psychological condition such as depression, bipolar disorder, multiple sclerosis, cancer or an addiction to a drug. For example, if someone who had problems with alcohol were to give up alcohol and then later start drinking again, this drinking might be considered a relapse. It is different from a slip or lapse in that it implies a return to previous behaviour patterns, as opposed to a one-time occurrence.
