Information on Nutrition

I was looking through the site and was interested on getting more feedback on the nutrition section. I am currently in recovery and this is the first time I have come across this type of specific information. Has anyone heard of this before? Has anyone followed this type of diet? Has it helped?

Thanks.

Information on Nutrition

As far as I know, good nutrition plays two important roles in recovery. Many people are depleted of nutrients when they are dealing with their addiction. Following a good regime helps to bring them back to their healthy, pre-addictive state. When someone is in recovery, it also helps to counteract as a trigger for relapse. When you are in recovery a good diet will help keep away any unnecessary irritation or cravings. The way I see it is that if a person who is not substance dependent is hungry they will grab a sandwhich or a piece of fruit for example to ease their appetite. If a person, who is going through recovery, is on poor diet and go through stages of recovery they might reach for their drug of choice instead of food to ease their appetite.

Interesting point of view TominKan. Never heard it said this way. Thanks for the information.

Take Care.

Information on Nutrition

Good for you for being proactive about your nutrition during your recovery! Depending on what the addiction was, one's nutritional needs can change. For example, an alcoholic may have a vitamin B1 deficiency due to replacing food with alcohol. I would seek the help of a RD based on the previous addiction so that the she/he can tailor your recovery. Good luck!
