I have been sober for 9 months now and going strong. I am a little worried though. Every two years I get together with 5 friends from college and we all take a trip somewhere because we all live all around the U.S.
We are going to Frnace for 10 days. Mostly Paris and then south for a while. All of these guys are pretty big drinkers.
I am getting nervous. I do want to go but if I have a glass of wine at dinner...say...will that plunge me back to where I was?
The way I look at it is that being in recovery is a lifestyle change. I stopped going to all the clubs and parties that I used to go to and that helped but I didn't run from every situation that involved drinks.
It is everywhere you look. If these are your true friends they will understand and respect your situation. I do not recommend having any drinks. Nothing is worth bringing you back to your old state.

I think it is good not to put yourself in a situation where you are strongly tempted......but I agree.....you can't avoid it your entire life. Just let them know ahead of time what your situation is and I know they will respect it. I also agree that you should not have just "one" drink. I know so many that have tried just to have "one" and then fall into two and three and four drinks.
I know all of this is easier said than done but remain strong. At the same time if you feel you are not ready for all this then you might want to hold off. Not sure how you are feeling.

Thanks for your words. It really makes sense. I know I can't just avoid situations my entire life. I think I am ready to be around them and I WILL NOT fall back to where I was before.
