caffeine dependenceCaffeine dependence can occur in some users but by definition it falls short of addiction, even though many people may informally feel addicted to it and consistently fail in their efforts to stop or control their intake.

Not all health care organizations agree on the user’s capacity to develop caffeine dependence, a point well-illustrated in the most recent edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). This manual omits listing substance dependence on caffeine as a potential diagnosis . The World Health Organization, on the other hand, includes caffeine dependence in its Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders (ICD-10).

The APA has withheld caffeine dependence from the DSM because they feel there is a dearth of convincing clinical data relating to other aspects of dependence.
