When an addict comes off a lengthy period of drug use, the process of detoxification (colloquially 'detox') is often medically necessary to prevent him from going into withdrawals and becoming sick. Detoxification centers serve this purpose; they provide a safe, medically monitored environment at which medications are dispensed to help to stem or blunt those physical withdrawal symptoms.

Detoxification is not necessary for all drug users and is best determined by a qualified addiction specialist or health professional.

Detox centers function on an outpatient basis. Following an evaluation, a physician establishes an appropriate medication schedule for the patient, who is then expected to return to the center each day for a period that varies widely, from a few days to two weeks or more.

Detox centers do not treat the disease of addiction; their sole purpose is to ease the physical transition off drugs. Detox patients are strongly encouraged to begin a drug treatment program on completing detox, since relapse is likely without further treatment.
