Time to quit smoking addiction in US

A recent study revealed that addiction to nicotine has reached a 15-year high in the United States, where nearly three quarters of people asking to be treated for tobacco dependence are classified as highly dependent. Dr. David P Sachs from the Palo Alto Center for Pulmonary Disease Prevention in California revealed based on the research he conducted along with some experts they found out that nicotine dependence has drastically increased in the US for the past 15 years.

According to their study, the nicotine dependence has gone up 12 per cent between 1989 and 2006 while the percentage of people classed as highly nicotine dependent has gone up by 32 per cent.

Sachs said the result is not quite surprising for him since he already seen physical manifestations from patients who seek to end their habit of smoking that they have a hard time kicking out the nicotine substance in their body.

Despite the astounding data they discovered, Sachs admitted that the study had not exactly pinpointed the reason behind the high percentage of persons addicted to nicotine in the US.

He and his colleague assumed that nicotine dependence in the US continues to rise since smokers have yet to realize that they are addicted to smoking and they need to give up this form of addiction.

Sachs said the study had shown that individualized treatments are badly needed to treat those persons who are hooked on smoking.

The medical experts said current treatment program might not be sufficient to treat nicotine addiction that there is a need to increase the dose and duration of medications.

He added there could also be the need to try different combinations of drugs and put more focus on minimizing withdrawal symptoms.

The study showed the extent on how rampant smoking addiction in the US.

This data must be taken as a revelation to all smokers not only in the US soil but also around the globe to finally put a stop to their habit that put their lives at risk.

Puffing a piece of cigarette is a right of every person in this planet but sometimes we need to look into the data and the society to learn about the ill effects of our habit.

We make our own decisions concerning smoking but as a member of the society and a family, we must also look into the welfare of our own kin and the other people around us.
