Are you a Compulsive Shopper?

How much do you need to buy to feel happy?
While compulsive shopping sounds innocent, and the stuff movies and books are made of, it can be a serious problem. In fact, compulsive shopping, also known as compulsive-buying disorder, can be just as addictive -- and as destructive -- as alcohol or drugs.
Recovering shoplifter and counselor Terrence Shulman offers these suggestions tp help curb your spending.
• Reduce temptations
• Cut up plastic; close charge accounts; rip up credit card offers and home equity applications
• Make lists before going to the store; buy what you need only – call folks, take a trusted friend
• Wait so many hours before purchase
• Do you need this or do you just want it?
• Develop other ways to handle emotions
• Develop fun things to do
• Learn to ride through urges and preoccupations
• Develop habits in stores
If you suspect you may have a shopping addiction, go to Shopaholics Anonymous (http://www.shopaholicsanonymous.org/), which offers an online quiz and more to help you determine the extent of your problem. Credit counseling may be a good place to start to evaluate the extent of damage you have done to your financial situation. Your bank may be able to make a referral.
