Xanax is the brand name of a central nervous system depressant medication known as alprazolam. It is a benzodiazepine medicine and is chiefly used to suppress panic attacks. It is also prescribed to cure nervousness and stress.
Xanax was commonly prescribed by doctors in the 60s. From the 70s, it ceased to be a commonly prescribed medication because patients reported that they were addicted to the medication. Addicted patients consumed up to 30 tablets a session. Medical professions slowly stopped prescribing Xanax unless absolutely necessary. Addicted patients suffer withdrawal symptoms like convulsions, anxiety, extreme mental stress, anorexia, sweating, tremors, loss of appetite and visual disturbances. Xanax consumed for non medical reasons is a health hazard. It is harmful to the brain and causes brain seizures, mental problems, coma and can sometimes be fatal. Recovery from addiction is best done in a professionally monitored rehab center through detoxification, behavioral therapy and medication.
