What to Give a Recovering Addict for Christmas

Answer: not a bottle of Scotch.

Ok, not funny. But what if you want to honor all the hard work someone in your life is doing to stay clean and sober? What can you do that celebrates their struggle and offers encouragement as well? Here are a few Ideas:
• Journal
• Pet (with their permission, of course)
• Gym membership
• Cell phone minutes
• Inspirational books

For other ideas, go to Serenity Happens for some light-hearted gifts, especially some great t-shirts. My faves? “I kept coming and the miracle happened” and “My bad, I thought you said streaker meeting.” Go to: http://www.serenityhappens.com/. Granted these might be better coming from someone who is also in recovery and can appreciate these.

For more serious gifts like bracelets, key chains and books, go to recoveryemporium.com or my12stepstore.com. A gift certificate to one of these stores would be especially helpful here. The Recovery Superstore has lots of gift ideas I love (http://www.recoverysuperstore.com/), including the Passages 2010 Daily Recovery Calendar, the Magic 12 Step Ball, and medallion holders. If you know the person well, and know what literature he or she has, a gift of a book like “Came to Believe” or “Daily Reflections” may be a valuable addition to their collection.

One final note: if the person is not in recovery, but should be, these gifts are not appropriate.

I agree that moving past

I agree that moving past drugs and alcohol addiction is a arduous task. I liked a lot of your blog posts and found them informative as well as uplifting. Instead of simply lamenting, the openess of your posts seem to be sort of inspirational.

For your readers I wanted to share CareFlorida's rehab center information. CareFlorida is a holistically based addiction recovery center located in North Palm Beach Florida. CareFlorda offers patients a unique guarantee- if relapse happens in the first six months after graduating their program, patients are welcomed back into the program and given a weeks’ worth of treatment for free.

I hope this holiday season we can help someone become healthy again. Thanks for all the posts your have done and I look forward to helping patients at www.careflorida.com

Happy & Healthy Holidays!
