Addiction is recognized by medical professionals and governments as a serious problem. This is because addiction is not only a physical and psychological problem but a social problem that ruins families and affects society.
Addiction is a chronic brain disorder. This disorder translates into an unpleasant physical disorder. A patient uses a substance to stimulate the reward system of the brain. This gives the patient a false sense of euphoria. To sustain the same euphoric sensation, the patient requires and increased doze of the substance for every successive use. If the substance is not available, the patient suffers unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. The substance becomes the obsession of the addict and the life of the patient revolves around the substance. Addiction always has an underlying psychological cause like depression or trauma. Addiction is dangerous because any substance in excess can cause irreparable harm to the organs of the body with fatal results.
