Nasal sprays are often used by patients to clear a clogged nose. Nasal sprays contain ingredients like phenylephrine, xylometazoline and oxymetazoline. The sprays give instant relief because the chemical acts directly in the problem.

Patients develop a chronic craving to use nasal sprays. Nasal sprays are easily available over the counter. Patients suffer withdrawal symptoms of depression, paranoia, drowsiness and a constant cold when nasal sprays are not available. Constant nasal spray use can cause health problems. The layer of skin between the nostrils will rupture with constant spraying if the chemicals in a nasal spray. In some cases the nasal lining is affected and scarring occurs. The addiction is treated using low doses of nasal steroids. Nasal spray addictions are addictions that often do not have a psychological basis like other addictions. Medication is sufficient to treat the addiction and psychological treatment or nutritional correction is not used for treatment.
