Addiction and compulsion are similar problems. They are both psychological problems that involve an irresistible urge. Advancement in psychological therapies has proved that both compulsion and addiction or a compulsive addiction can be effectively treated and cured.
A patient with a compulsive addiction has an underlying psychological problem. The addiction is used to forget the problem. To forget the psychological problem, the patient keeps using s harmful substance like alcohol or heroin though they know that the addiction is harmful to health, their families and society at large. Patients are fully aware of the negative consequences of their addiction but find it impossible to give up their compulsive craving. This is why addiction is considered one among the many psychological disorders. Addiction gives short term psychological relief but long term physical pain. Patients soon regard their addiction as their best friend while being fully aware that it is their worst enemy.
