A Review of Biblical Aspects of the Twelve Steps

I have asked my friend Eric L. Davis, PhD, LCSW, LCAC, author of "The Bible and Recovery: A Review of Biblical Aspects of the Twelve Steps," to share a little about his new book:

For hundreds of years, the disease of addiction has tattered and torn the lives of millions of people all over the world. Nearly every single person in the world knows of at least one person who has battled this disease. For years, alcoholics were seen as persons who were “weak-willed” or “morally insufficient,” and little was available to help those afflicted with alcoholism get back on track.

But something magical happened on June 10, 1935. Two alcoholics by the names of Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous in Akron, OH. Together, they found a way to combat the disease of addiction, and shared the steps they took in a book simply titled, Alcoholics Anonymous – better known in recovery circles as the “Big Book.” Since its inception, Alcoholics Anonymous (as well as hundreds of other Anonymous fellowships using the same proven formula) has helped multitudes of people to obtain sobriety and remain clean and sober, one day at a time.

As a licensed clinician specializing in the treatment of mental health and addiction for many years, I have seen the twelve steps work miracles in the lives of countless persons who felt that they were beyond hope. The twelve steps have long been known in recovery circles to lead individuals on their own journey toward a true sense of spiritual wholeness, but what is responsible for this spiritual evolution taking place? How do such simple steps pack so much power? A biblical interpretation of each of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous is offered, investigating how the process compares to what is written in scripture.

The book investigates how opening one’s thinking to the power of God can and does cure disease—specifically the disease of addiction – one day at a time. To learn more, you can order the book online at www.EricLDavis.com
