Binge Eating or food addictions are both a psychological and physiological disease. Suffering emotional trauma during childhood or persons with low self-esteem is oftentimes pointed to as the likely predisposing factors of binge eating. This disease condition crosses all boundaries of sex, race, size, economic status, etc.
Food is a basic necessity of life. The want to taste delectable food and the satisfaction of having eaten is one of life’s most delectable pleasures. But when this need is taken to a different degree, this feeling of enjoyment is lost. This is what the binge eaters experience.
Binge eaters are totally obsessed with food. It is not their hunger that dictates them to eat. Their need for food is deeply based on their emotions. They want to crowd out feelings of guilt, sadness and other uncomfortable feelings by binging. Food is consumed to a different level even when not hungry just to have the feeling of contentment. Food addicts maintain“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” composure in front of other people. They are able to control their compulsion to devour more food. But in the safety confines of their homes or room, they gobble their food. Some will even bring to a much higher degree by binging and purging, which is a much more serious condition.
