Remembering My Hazy Days

In my most dark days I wondered if I would ever see the light. I wanted out but did not have the courage or ability to get out. Now that I am out I wonder: Am I the same Charles as I was so long ago. Am I still an alcoholic? I do not have cravings, yet I desire from time to time those smoke filled bars and the women in which I used to talk to. The life style, like a poem attracts me still. Can I truly ever be free?

That sounds pretty much like

That sounds pretty much like nostalgia - there had to be rewards in what you were doing, or it wouldn't have been self-perpetuating. It's perfectly reasonable that those memories are emotionally charged for you now, because you know what was really going on and are able to make choices. That is about as free as any of us gets, and it's fair to congratulate yourself occasionally on using that freedom to find your way out of the haze.
