Psychological Signs of Alcoholism

People constantly associate alcoholism in terms of its physical effects such liver damage. But psychological effects are much more painful and damaging. Psychological effects include depression, anxiety, personality changes, obsession, and denial.

Alcohol is a depressant. Alcohol levels in the blood can decrease the activity of the nervous system particularly the brain. When people have problems and they turn to alcohol to “drown out their sorrows”, they just worsened the situation because alcohol can deepen the depression and make it last longer.

Alcohol can induce a massive personality change. Alcoholics may become egotistical, selfish, and even become hostile. They become aggressive and exhibit mood swings. These behavioral changes are brought about the effect of alcohol on serotonin which is a chemical that transmits signals to the brain and influence the mood of a person.

Another personality change induced by alcohol abuse is a deterioration of morals brought about by the slowing down of thinking and reasoning.

Obsession to alcohol can cloud every other aspect in your life. What matters is getting the next glass the soonest possible time.

Since addiction to alcohol is a progressive disease, the more and the longer you drink, more effects will be manifested.
