How to Break a Porn Addiction

Learning how to break a porn addiction can be difficult as pornography is so readily available on the Internet, it is easy to get addicted to it. Here are some tips to break your addiction to porn.

Get rid of all porn

Obviously, the first step is to stop looking at porn. But that also includes getting rid of anything you might have on your computer. Destroy all files, pictures, videos and games. You must also throw away physical items such as magazines and DVDs.

Block access

Get a filter or an ISP that filters porn sites. As fathering expert Wayne Parker writes on About.com:

If you are tempted by the neighborhood strip club or adult bookstore, change you routes to work so you don't pass by. Establish some meaningful limits in your behavior.

Out in the open

Parker also suggests getting things out in the open. Confess to your spouse or a religious leader. And move your computer to a common area of the house so everyone in the household can see what you are doing while online.

Identify your trigger

There is likely something that triggers looking at porn. Identify what that is, and then do something else besides indulging your urge.

Therapy

If these self-help steps do not work, you may need to seek therapy. There are online therapists who specialize in porn addiction, and there are also 12-step programs that could help.
